The Quiet Power of Getting It Right: Aliza Lamprey Has Been Running Payroll for 35 Years. Your Business Is in Very Good Hands.
While the rest of the world chases the next shiny software solution, Aliza Lamprey and Cardiff Wages Service have been doing something far more valuable: getting it right, every single time, for three and a half decades.
There is a particular kind of confidence that only comes from having done something, properly, for a very long time. You see it in a great tailor. In a surgeon who has performed the same procedure a thousand times. In Aliza Lamprey.
Lamprey runs Cardiff Wages Service, and she has been taking the full weight of payroll off employers' shoulders since before HMRC's Real Time Information system even existed. Thirty-five years is not a milestone you stumble into. It is earned, quietly, through accuracy and reliability and the kind of professional care that keeps clients coming back year after year.
Payroll is one of those functions that nobody thinks about until something goes wrong. Get it right and it is invisible. Get it wrong and suddenly you are on the phone to HMRC at half past four on a Friday, trying to unpick a submission error while your staff are waiting to be paid. Lamprey's clients do not have that problem.
'Payroll is one of those things every employer must get right, yet most find genuinely tedious to manage. We've spent 35 years quietly solving that problem.'
The scope of what Cardiff Wages Service handles is broader than many business owners realise. This is not a matter of running a few numbers through a spreadsheet. The team manages the entire PAYE cycle: calculating wages across variable shift patterns, producing fully compliant payslips, processing maternity calculations, applying student loan deductions correctly and reporting directly to HMRC on each pay run. RTI deadlines simply cease to be a concern for clients. Lamprey's team absorbs all of it.
That breadth matters particularly for growing businesses, which tend to be the messiest and most vulnerable. A small hospitality company with fluctuating hours, a retail business suddenly taking on seasonal staff, a founder who has just hired their first employee and is quietly terrified of doing something wrong: these are exactly the clients Cardiff Wages Service was built to serve. The team understands the specific pressures that come with scaling, and they do not treat each query as an inconvenience.
The compliance credentials are serious. The business operates under HMRC Anti-Money Laundering supervision and is fully GDPR compliant. When you hand over payroll data, you are handing over some of the most sensitive information your business holds: salary details, personal employee data, tax codes, bank references. Lamprey handles all of it with a rigour that the big automated platforms, for all their marketing spend, often fail to match. Those platforms are built for volume and speed. Cardiff Wages Service is built for accuracy and trust.
There is also something to be said for speaking to an actual person. Automated payroll software has its place, but it does not know that your business has three employees on different pension contribution rates and one on a career break with complex statutory pay to calculate. It cannot pick up the phone. Lamprey and her team can, and do.
Small business owners are routinely told to focus on what they are good at and hand everything else to specialists. The advice is easy to give and harder to follow, particularly when it comes to something as sensitive as staff pay. Cardiff Wages Service makes it straightforward. You hand over the details, Lamprey's team handles the complexity, your employees get paid correctly and on time, and you get your headspace back.
Thirty-five years of experience is the kind of thing that sounds like a marketing line until you actually need it. Then it sounds like exactly what you were looking for.

5 Questions with Aliza Lamprey
The woman who has been quietly making sure Britain's small businesses actually pay their people correctly, for 35 years and counting.
1. Payroll. Not exactly the sexiest corner of running a business. Why has it held your attention for 35 years?
Because getting it wrong is catastrophic and getting it right is invisible, and I find that tension genuinely fascinating. Every payslip represents a real person waiting to be paid correctly on a specific day. That never gets old, even if RTI deadlines sometimes feel like they do.
2. What's the most common mistake you see business owners make before they come to you?
Assuming payroll software does the thinking for them. It doesn't. It processes what you tell it to, and if you've miscategorised a student loan or fumbled a maternity calculation, the software just produces a very confident wrong answer. The tool is not the expertise.
3. You work with businesses across the UK. What do growing companies tend to underestimate about taking on their first employees?
The sheer variability. Variable hours, irregular shift patterns, someone going on leave mid-cycle. The moment your workforce stops being a neat fixed number on a spreadsheet, the complexity multiplies fast. That's precisely where we earn our keep.
4. GDPR compliance, HMRC Anti-Money Laundering supervision. Heavy stuff. How do you make clients feel at ease handing over sensitive data?
By being completely matter-of-fact about it. We don't dress it up in reassuring marketing language. We just explain exactly what frameworks govern how we operate and let the rigour speak for itself. People relax when they realise you take it more seriously than they do.
5. Finish this sentence: A business owner who tries to manage their own payroll is like someone who...
...rewires their own house because they once changed a plug. Technically, it's the same general territory. In practice, it's really, truly not.
